What is Brown Space Horizons?

All events are free and open to the Brown community and the general public. We recommend registering in advance, but walk-ins are also welcome!

Space Travel may be entering its renaissance. Space Horizons 2024 asks:

Will we recreate the errors of our past at our future homes in space, on the Moon and on Mars? Or can we do better expanding into space than we did populating the Earth’s continents?

Human discovery generally creates a few wealthy individuals or nations, while degrading the fresh new environments they exploit or colonize. Will the Moon, Mars, or the solar system be any different? What will be the effects to humans still living on Earth, to our atmosphere, our climate, or our view into space with tens of thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit?

Is it possible that by realizing the risks and benefits of space settlement, resource extraction, and transportation, we can improve outcomes for the future ecologies of Earth and our neighbors in the solar system? What about the politics and conflicts over prime real estate, particularly where resources are abundant and settlement prospects are greatest – like the Moon’s south pole? Can we prevent space wars in Earth orbit and lunar terrestrial military conflict?

Do we ‘Earth the Moon’ as if it were just another landmass on Earth, complete with factories, dense human settlement, military conflict, and negative impacts on both its environment and our own? Or does lunar and planetary settlement offer an opportunity to get it right this time?

Join us!

Friday, May 10th – in the afternoon

Saturday, May 11th – all day

Listen to and interact with experts in the space environment. Discuss living and supporting life in space, on the Moon and Mars, the impact on their ecosystems, the risks and potential, and the politics and policy dimensions of human expansion into space.

Register to attend at no cost here on our website! We’re looking forward to planning our future together with you!
